Jan van Goyen Portrait and Dr. Deijman’s Anatomy Lesson

This portrait of the important Dutch landscape and Sea painter (1596 – 56), is similar to a known portrait of the artist, done about a decade later, by Gerard Terborch in the Prince of Liechtenstein Collection, Vaduz. Influenced by Esaias van de Velde, he developed a more naturalistic style of landscape painting The atmospheric effects he achieved were carried forward more in his own landscapes by the later J.M.W. Turner. The portrait may be a work by Rembrandt van Rin, a contemporary of the artist, playing as it does on some elements contained in Rembrandt’s The Anatomy Lesson of Dr. Deijman, in the Amsterdam, H’ART Museum, painted by Rembrandt in 1656.
