Man with Turban – Attributed John Henry Fuseli. Fell under the influence of the Enlightenment, dominating eighteenth century European ideas.In 1764 he was in London where he translated, J. J. Winkelmann’s 1765 Reflections on Painting. Like his contemporary, William Blake, Michaelangelesque
Mannerism that he saw in 1770 in Italy was the dominant influence on his art. Fuseli was in Rome 1773 and associated with the German Romantic movement. Returned to London in 1779, at the Royal Academy’s Summer Exhibition he displayed his canvas, The Nightmare. He befriended Sir Joshua
Reynolds,.resulting in Fuseli being elected a Royal Academician in 1790. Died in 1825.
