Our Lady of Sorrows Sassoferrato

(Giovanni Battista Salvi) Born 1609 in Sassoferrato in the Marches, from where his given name derived. An Italian Baroque painter, known for his manner re-evoking Raphael’s then antiquated style that was encouraged by Counter-Reformation artisric tendencies An Italian Baroque painter, known for his manner re-evoking earlier artisric tendencies. Like Perugino he concentrated on producing multiple variations of his earlier successes especially of Our Lady of Sorrows: the Sword of Christ piercing Mary’s Heart. Sassoferrato died in 1685.
